The research performed for this study focused on the broader aspect of the commercial banking industry of the financial services sector of the American economy. This approach may have omitted some types of financial services provided by specialized commercial banking institutions. The research performed, however, did encompass the great majority of financial services provided by commercial banks in the United States.
Literature relevant to the problem investigated is reviewed in this chapter. The topics reviewed in this chapter include the development of the American banking system, the regulation of the financial services sector, deposit protection policy, pricing theory, strategy and tactics, cost accounting procedures related to product costing, and defining bank products.
