Higher levels of formal educational attainment may pre clude the deterioration of job satisfaction among professional 4nurses in two ways (White, & Maguire, 1973). First, the addi tional time spent in formal educational preparatory programs may provide the professional nurse with the background, under standing, and psychological techniques necessary to approach their responsibilities as professional nurses in ways which will preclude the development of burn out (Hinshaw, Smeltzer, & Atwood, 1987).
