Higher levels of formal educational attainment may preclude the deterioration of job satisfaction among professional 4nurses in two ways (White, & Maguire, 1973). First, the additional time spent in formal educational preparatory programs may provide the professional nurse with the background, under standing, and psychological techniques necessary to approach their responsibilities as professional nurses in ways which will preclude the development of burnout (Hinshaw, Smeltzer, & Atwood, 1987). Second, the additional time devoted to formal educational preparation may provide professional nurses with both the skills and the status required to insure that they will not become lockedinto lower level positions within a health care delivery
