There are very intriguing and specific details included in each scene, such as the story about Ma'am Betty the schoolteacher who chewed tobacco (Stern 8), but it is impossible to determine if they are facts, or simply details made up in order to serve the purposes of the narrative. While Stern could know about Ma'am Betty from other sources, she likely could not know that Eugene was thinking at that very time that he wished he were a year younger (Stern 8). There are numerous instances in which Stern describes the thoughts and feelings of other characters involved in Margaret's life, as well as Margaret's herself, that seem unlikely to have been written down and available as primary sources.

It is thus difficult to determine how should one read a book like this. It is very interesting and the narrative style of the book might make it more accessible for some people. It is probably an accurate account of the main events of Fuller's life. It also probably includes a great deal of accurate information about the characters in her life and their behavior. However, it has some of the feel of a book for children, rather than the style of formal biographies for adults. These are generally much dryer, academic in tone, and sometimes very dull. However, they seem more reliable because they have the kind of tone that is associated with facts, rather than fiction. They, too, might attribute thoughts and actions to their subjects, but in a more subtle way that is not always apparent to the reader.
