Importance of the Issue of Euthanasia

act that so many people are interested in euthanasia is not necessarily a sign that this is a deathdriven culture. On the contrary, we are a culture very much enamored with life and almost obsessive about our physical and psychological wellbeing. Few of us like pain and suffering, and only those of us who are profoundly religious can find meaning in them (Tong 33).

Modern medical science can and should work miracles for victims of disease and injury, and doctors use a variety of drugs and other treatments to relieve pain. The real issue, however, is not what doctors can do but how much we are going to spend on medical treatments. Dax Cowart says that the real issue is not the right to die, but the right to be made whole, which often is not possible. He says that euthanasia is better than forcing people to live with their pain, which in some cases can also mean creating a more expensive situation as well: "If they're going to override a patient's wishes, then they ought to be there to help him override the deficiencies that he's left with" (Wicker 20-21).
