A major objection to hedonism as an ethical system for use by a whole society is that it is not really a coherent ethical system, but, according to Gosling (1969) a set of arguments for a set of theses. These are separated into empirical theses about what explains our actions and ethical theses about how we should make choices about our actions. In addition, there are a number of problems regarding the definitions involved, including definitions of pleasure and desire.
