The reign of James Robinson as CEO took the company through a period of growth and ended with a period of uncertainty and scandal. The image of American Express would suffer greatly during the latter, and part of the problem was seen in the selling off of Fireman's Fund and the Trade Development Bank and the damage done to Shearson Lehman Brothers.
