Gang homicides account for approximately 35 percent of the homicides in Los Angeles County, or 690 deaths in 1990. Gang homicides have increased in the last decade and are concentrated in a small area of Los Angeles County; they are likely to involve young black males. Victims are more likely to die of firearm injuries in early evening; drive-by shooting is found to be highly associated with gang homicide (Rogers, 1993).

In Los Angels, drive-by shootings cause morbidity and mortality among children and adolescents; more than 90 percent of these shootings are by members of violent street gangs. A review of the files of the Gang Information Section of the Los Angeles Police Department showed that in 1991, 677 adolescents and children were shot at; 71 percent were gang members. All homicide victims were African American and Hispanic; 97 percent were boys (Hutson, Anglin, & Pratts, 1994).
