He had originally wished to become an archaeologist, while at the University of Basel, but settled on a career in medicine and took his medical degree at the University of Zurich in 1902.

Jung took his first professional position under Eugene Bleuler at the Burgh÷lzli Mental Hospital in Zurich. At the Burgh÷lzli Jung achieved his first great success with his application of word association tests, which had been designed by others. The tests, which have become very common, consisted of giving the subject a word to which he responded by giving the first word that came to mind. The responses were evaluated on the basis of "the delay between the stimulus and his response, the appropriateness of the response word, and the behaviour exhibited" (Cook 404). As he observed the potential for this test to produce a key to ideas at the heart of "complexes," a term Jung invented to refer to the "combination of the idea with the strong emotions it aroused," he was intrigued by the potential for this knowledge to illuminate the way the psyches of the patients truly functioned (Cook 404).
