Gender separation in employment continues to be the norm in Japanese society. The Japanese women who enter the labor force as employees are considered expendable, particularly during recessionary periods, when their jobs are sacrificed to maintain the lifelong employment commitment to certain classes of male employees. In Japan, big companies have created a two-track career system for women. One is a non-career track for women who are not interested in entering future management positions, and the other track is for potential managers. This two-track system is discriminatory because it is only available to women. It resulted in part from a 1986 Japanese law to encourage equal opportunity, and was conceived as a means to help women compete with men.
