Adler's Personality Theory & Child Rearing Practices

ctices and strategies have been discussed by Williams (1990) who reports that the contemporary Adlerian view focuses on the misconception parents (and often educators) hold regarding child-rearing practices. The view states that both groups believe they must continually try to mold a child according to their perceived ideal--a notion said to futile. Common ways in which parents mishandle problems in raising their children are said to include: (1) denying a problem exists, (2) having unrealistic expectations, and (3) following principles of parenting which are only adding to their problems. According to Williams (1990), the Adlerian perspective asserts that parents and educators can only develop or hamper children's natural tendencies, or better yet, direct them toward cultural goals. Adler feels that only the parent who has overcome his/her own shortcomings will be capable of developing the child's potential.

As to the shortcomings of parents and their effects on the child, the contemporary Adlerian view still emphasizes the inferiority/superiority dimensions discussed by Adler. In this regard, Nelsen (1996) reports that Adler's perspective contends that almost every individual suffers from some real or perceived injury to esteem in childhood resulting in feelings of inferiority and that what is need is to overcome these feelings is for parents (as well as others working with children such as psychologists, educators, physicians) to assist children to learn self-discipline, responsibility, problem-solving skills, and cooperation.

In order for parents to overcome their own difficulties with feelings of inferiority and to assist their children in dealing with similar feelings, the Adlerian perspective emphasizes behavioral and educational training. A variety of behavioral and educational strategies are emphasized.
