After graduation from medical school, Denise stayed in Chicago to do a five year surgical residency at a large downtown hospital. Leslie, who was specializing in orthopedics, decided to do her residency in a smaller hospital located outside Chicago. She preferred the more suburban setting, and was interested in training with a prominent physician/author whom she had met while in medical school. Daniel was encouraging when Leslie expressed an interest in a residency with him, and she was anxious to work with someone whose reputation could enhance her own.
Although working in different towns, Denise and Leslie got together about once a month for dinner and long conversations, primarily focused on work. Over the next year, Leslie became romantically involved with Daniel, and was able to get away to meet with Denise less and less. Denise's and Leslie's visits were reduced to irregular phone calls.
