apital. General Motors bought Buick that same year. Bylaws were passed to provide for a seven-member board of directors. The new president was William M. Eaton, a prominent businessman in Jackson, Michigan. Curtis R. Hatheway was a Wall Street attorney and was elected secretary and treasurer. Another purchase the first year was the W.F. Stewart Body Company, which had been building Buick bodies. This shows that the company was always interested in owning suppliers and keeping control of their product from beginning to end. Late in 1908 the company acquired its second line of automobiles by buying the Olds Motor Works, or the Oldsmobile. The Olds company was having problems, but it did have manufacturing experience and also name recognition with the buying public (Cray, 1980: pp. 70-73).
