Pollock-Byrne notes first the relationship between morals and ethics, with morals directed toward determining what is judged as good conduct while ethics is directed toward what constitutes good or bad conduct. Morals are principles, and ethics is the philosophical study of those principles. Ethics is a framework derived from an understanding of what is right or wrong, or what is perceived as right or wrong in a given society. There are certain ideas we may assume are universal principles (such as the prohibition on murder) and others where societal differences are strong (as can be seen in the very different legal conceptions of, say, the U.S. and a Muslim country). In each case, though, there is an ethical framework for behavior that exists before the law and on which the law is based.
