Studies of psychiatric outpatients reveal correlations between levels of hostility and diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, and a strong correlation between hostility and medication compliance. A recent study of psychiatric outpatients (Link, 1992), analyzed data from 186 outpatients and 46 inpatients with 521 New York City community residents, who had never received psychiatric treatment; higher rates of violence were demonstrated, in the sample of mental patients (Mulvey, 1994; Torrey, 1994).
A 1990 study of 728 men from the Cook County Chicago jail, revealed the prevalence of schizophrenia was approximately 3 times higher in the jail and prison samples than in the general population samples, the prevalence of major depression was 3-4 times higher, the prevalence of mania or bi-polar disorder was 7-14 times higher, and the prevalence of any severe disorder was 3-4 times higher (Monahan, 1992).
