Although considered a form of magic, feng shui also has roots in religion and ancestor worship. If the vital energy of the earth's landscape is disturbed (the loss of good feng shui) it can result in the disturbance of disembodied spirits. For this reason, a traditional use of feng shui has been in the siting of graves. Relatives sometimes consult feng shui geomancers before burying ancestors in the belief that good ancestral graves help the living: "Not only one's ancestors but oneself can expect to benefit or suffer accordingly, just as with good or bad ancestor worship" (Emmons, 1992, p. 40).

Emmons (1992) found that belief in the utility of feng shui persists in modern Hong Kong society, regardless of socio-economic background. In fact, the rich were more heavily committed to feng shui than the poor. As Baen and Teoh (1992) explain, "The rich cannot afford the risk of ignoring feng-shui or the advice of the geomancer" (p. 20).

A telephone survey conducted in 1980 revealed that 35 percent of the respondents believed in feng shui. Age was positively related to such belief, but even among the young (under 18), almost 20 percent were believers (Emmons, 1992,
