Helen and Penelope in The Iliad and The Odyssey

lls the story of how Penelope manages to avoid her many suitors during her husband, Odysseus' absence after the Trojan War. When the poem begins, Odysseus has been trapped on an island by the nymph Kalypso on his way home from the war. The goddess Athena appears to Odysseus' son Telemakhos and encourages him to go in search of his father, whom everyone wants to believe is dead. Telemakhos journeys to seek information about his father while Penelope remains behind attempting to ward off her suitors while remaining chaste and faithful to her husband.

In The Iliad, Helen is described as "lovely" (3.56), "the great beauty" (3.204), "shaped by heaven" (3.504), and "enticing" (4.400). She is a prize for any Greek man but also a prize for Greek's enemies, the Trojans. She is first married to Menelaos but during his absence from Greece, she flee
