Biochemical Manifestations of Hypoxia

a is discussed as a pathogenic factor of this disturbance. Researchers assume that recurrent sleep hypoxia induces anoxic brain damage which may cause sleepiness, cognitive deficits, and psychological dysfunction (5).

Cerebral oxygen supply has also been studied in relation to brain injury during infant cardiac surgery. du Plessis, Newburger, Jonas, Hickey, Naruse, Tsuji, Walsh, Walter, Wypij, and Volpe studied 63 infants undergoing deep hypothermic repair of congenital heart defects and report that the cerebral concentration of oxidized cytochrome aa3 decreased from the onset of deep hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. During deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, levels remained depressed, and those of oxyhemoglobin declined; delays in recovery of mitochondrial oxygenations occurred following arrest. These findings may identify infants at risk for cerebral injury during this surgery. Alterations in cerebral metabolism and hemodynamics resulting in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury were found (4).

Studies with animals support detrimental effects of hypoxia. Prenatal exposure to a noxa may result in a differentiated brain injury pattern; prenatally hypoxia-induced damage can modify adaptability throughout the different life phases of rats (6). Studies with cats show that increased local supplies of oxygen reduced or eliminated cer
