During deep hypothermic circulatory arrest, levels remained depressed, and those of oxyhemoglobin declined; delays in recovery of mitochondrial oxygenations occurred following arrest. These findings may identify infants at risk for cerebral injury during this surgery. Alterations in cerebral metabolism and hemodynamics resulting in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury were found (4).
