und compared 11 rape-prone males (mean age 25.6 years), who were most likely afflicted with the PRP, with 11 sexually normal controls (mean age 25.8 years) on penile response (PR) to narratives that depicted scenes in which the individual engaged in behavior typical of voyeurs, exhibitionists, or toucheurs.
Narratives depicting normal tactile interaction with a genuinely participating woman, normal intercourse, and sexually neutral scenes were also presented. The rape-prone males responded more to the voyeuristic situations than did the controls. The standing of the normal intercourse situations on the scale of erotic value, relative to the other above-mentioned situations, was lower for the rape-prone males than for the controls.
There is some empirical support for a biological, hereditary predisposition to rape. For example, Money (1990) argues strongly for biogenetic predisposition in cases of paraphilic serial rape. As Money puts it:
Paraphilic sex offenders on trial are misrepresented as being, by their own choice, psychopathic or sociopathic deviates. (p. 26)
According to Money (1990) examination of prisoners on death row for both serial rape and serial lust murder have found several contributors to the commission of these crimes. These include: hereditary predisposition, hormonal functioning; pathological relationships, sexual abuse; and syndrome overlap with bipolar disorder, schizoid disorder, antisocial personality disorder, epilepsy, and multiple personality. In some cases, childhood head injuries, and adult head injuries are said to precipitate the problem.
Because of the strong connections between these forms of serial rape and lust murder, Money (1990) argues that the crimes are really manifestations of an epidemiological, public health problem. For this reason, Money states that punishment for the crimes cannot be substituted for continuing epidemiological research into its causes.
