For example, the baboon infraorder Catarrhini is distinguished from the primitive condition by the fact that it only has two premolars in each quadrant of the jaw. In addition, Catarrhini also has "complete postorbital closure" and "a relatively flattened bulla with a long external auditory meatus" (Schwartz, 1986, pp. 5-6).

Within the baboon superfamily Cercopithecoidea, the family Cercopithecidae comprises various Old World monkeys. The two main groupings include the leaf-eating colobines and the cercopithecine monkeys. The cercopithecine monkeys include the Asian macaques, and the African guenons and baboons.

The baboons belong to the subfamily, Cercopithecinae. These animals have "long faces, narrow interorbital distances, narrow nasal apertures, relatively marked facial height, a lacrimal fossa confined to an enlarged lacrimal bone, and a median mental foramen" (Schwartz, 1986, p. 18).
