In Roy's adaptation model, inputs "are mediated by the control process of subsystems of cognator and regulator coping mechanisms. The regulator mechanism is an automatic neuroendocrine response while the cognator subsystem represents perception, information processing, and judgments influenced by learning and emotions" (Chinn, Jacobs, and Huether, 1991, p. 193). In the adaptation model of nursing, system "effectors are the adaptive modes. These modes (physiologic, self-concept, role function, and interdependence) are the form in which regulator and cognator subsystems manifest their activity" (Chinn, Jacobs, and Huether, 1991, p. 193). The patient's (adaptive system's) output "is a response which may be adaptive or ineffective. Adaptive responses . . . contribute to adaptive goals . . . that promote health, survival, reproduction, and self-mastery. . . . Adaptation responses contribute to health . . .; ineffective responses do not" (Chinn, Jacobs, and Huether, 1991, p. 193).
Cultural Values and Health Beliefs of Middle Eastern Population
Most people in the United States from the Middle Eastern region identify with the Islamic religion (Meleis, 1992, p. 98). An understanding of Islamic principles and values, thus, is essential in the development of care practices for the great majority of these people. It is important for the nurse to be aware, however, that not all immigrants to the United States from the Middle East are Muslims, and that this minority among Middle Eastern immigrants require a different set of care practices (Luna, 1989, p. 22).
