It should be noted here that there is research supporting the foregoing stages and change processes regarding smoking cessation. For example, in her analysis of the experiences of women who had successfully quit smoking, Thompson (1995) found evidence of some of the change processes described above.

Thompson's (1995) study was qualitative in nature and utilized a volunteer, purposive sample of 10 women from the Columbus, Georgia-Phoenix City, Alabama, area who had ceased smoking for a least six months, but for not more than three years. A semi-structured, focused interview format was used to elicit data concerning their experiences.

The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. The demographic data were analyzed using basic descriptive statistics. The database program Ethnograph was used to facilitate the data analysis.
