It is not a procedure that directly affects mortality or survival; however it may have an influence on morbidity and psychological well being (Brown, 1991, p. 1167). Some women decide to have breast reconstruction because they want to wear bathing suits and clothes they were able to wear before their cancer diagnosis. Breast prostheses are often uncomfortable and inconvenient. Conversely, women often decide not to have breast reconstruction because the idea of having additional surgery is too frightening or they cannot find a good plastic surgeon. Some husbands or family members do not think reconstruction is necessary, or the patient thinks she is too old. Other women fear physical problems associated with surgical procedures and that the breasts will never be symmetrical. Many woman are concerned that implants will prevent recurring cancer from being detected, or the implants will be rejected, or the implants themselves are cancer producing (Brown, 1990, p. 1168).
