m is a depiction of life and the degree to which that life is left to the individual to control. This is an interesting theme in the context of present-day China, but the director does manage to make clear that the individual is responsible much as Douzi is as he burns his cape and looks for a way to raise himself.
Certain issues are faced by all the primary characters. Shitou is the young actor who portrays macho warriors, but there is a question as to whether this fulfills him. He marries a former prostitute and seems happy, but he always seems to feel the need to defy those in authority.
