The island of Maui is especially important and is made up of two ancient volcanoes. The portion of the island that can be seen is only a small part of it, for it extends 5 kilometers beneath the surface to rest firmly on the floor of the Pacific. The volcanic cones that form the islands in this chain are the most massive structures on earth, and each of the cones is made up of dark, iron-rich rock. Major eruptive centers in the chain are separated by distances of at least 40 kilometers, but they are still close enough to one another that flows from one volcano may overlap those of another so that separate cones may merge to form single islands.
