The Wesley brothers and four other men journeyed to America in 1735. During that sojourn, Wesley upheld all the Anglican Church's major festivals, at which communion was observed (Bowmer (b), 31-32). According to Bowmer, Wesley frequently administered the Lord's Supper to the sick and dying (32). However, it was his strict enforcement of the disciplines of the Anglican Church which forbade administration of the sacraments to anyone who had not been baptized by a properly ordained minister that led to much difficulty for Wesley in America (a position he was later to regret and reject) (Bowmer (b), 33).

Although Wesley's rigidity was "too severe" for the colonists in Georgia, as early as 1773, at the first conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, it was affirmed that no preacher in America could properly administer either the Lord's Supper or the rite of baptism.
