Given the gravity of the situation, it becomes imperative to determine those treatment strategies most effective in remediating these conditions. However, in order to make this determination, there needs to be an evaluation of the overall soundness of the existing literature on the topic. Without establishing the validity of the knowledge base, using it to derive a judgement of the overall effectiveness of treatment is futile.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the current literature on the hypnotic treatment of anxiety disorders from an evaluative perspective. Specifically, an attempt is made to point to weaknesses in the existing knowledge base on this topic as well as to indicate where we need to gather new information to correct for the existing weaknesses.
