For anger to arise from change, confusion, and dissatisfaction, a person must have a coherent explanation: a new way to interpret old grievances, a theory that the individual can apply to his or her own life, and alternatives to that life that the individual thinks are feasible (268).

In other words, anger plays an important role in an individual's clarification of what social, economic, sexual and other forces are at work on her or him, and what the effects of those forces are. In addition, anger can help the individual form a view of what action can shape her or his life in the context of those forces.

If there is an argument against Tavris' views, it could be that she does not provide much in the way of scholastic support for her claims. In the nineteen pages of the book dedicated to an examination of the relationship between anger and the women's movement, for example, the author provides nineteen footnotes, but only nine of those include specific page references in the works cited.
