There are many different kinds of respirators currently available for industrial use. These devices are commonly classified as either air-purifying or atmosphere-supplying (Arad, 1991, pp. 636-642). Further, the two major subgroups can also be subdivided according to such factors as type of adhesion (e.g., loose-fitting or tight-fitting) or means of air supply (e.g., compressor or tanks).
According to Arad (1991), air-purifying respirators contain mechanical filters for the removal of airborne particulate matter.
