There are many different kinds of respirators currently available for industrial use. These devices are commonly classified as either air-purifying or atmosphere-supplying (Arad, 1991, pp. 636-642). Further, the two major subgroups can also be subdivided according to such factors as type of adhesion (e.g., loose-fitting or tight-fitting) or means of air supply (e.g., compressor or tanks).

According to Arad (1991), air-purifying respirators contain mechanical filters for the removal of airborne particulate matter. However, where gases or vapors might be encountered, chemical cartridge filters are necessary. These systems use forced air filtration.
