Airbus Industrie (AI) was created in 1970 as a result of a joint venture among the British, French and German governments. Members of the consortium maintain their autonomy with respect to fixed capital, production facilities, research laboratories and administrative services. Specific companies contribute discrete tasks. The three governments involved also agreed to support the project through the purchase of planes from AI (Golich, 1992, p. 916). As of 1992, Airbus did not have additional collaborative efforts in force, although specific members, including British Aerospace and Aerospatiale, France, were engaged in collaborative efforts with other companies.

Aerospatiale and British Aerospace are investigating following up the supersonic transport collaborative effort in which they are already engaged, while Aerospatiale and an Italian company are producing a civil transport aircraft.
