Smoking Behavior

= 3,532; males n = 2,652) were categorized by gender and ethnicity, and their prevalence for three major CHD risk factors (hypertension, high serum cholesterol, smoking) was determined.

Overall, 60.1 percent of the participants were found to have one or more risk factors. A more favorable risk factor profile was found for women in regard to hypertension (women: 21.3 percent; men: 26.7 percent) and smoking (women: 9.6 percent; men: 12.3 percent) prevalences (p<.05). However, significantly more women had high serum cholesterol (women: 47.4 percent; men: 42.9 percent).

Overall, African American males had the least favorable risk factor profile (highest hypertension and smoking incidence). Asian females had the most favorable (49 percent were free of risk factors).
