The conjoining of Hebraism and Hellenism results not in freedom but perfection. These two great spiritual forces strive to instruct individuals as to what is the best way to achieve human perfection or salvation. " The uppermost idea with Hellenism is to see things as they really are; the uppermost idea with Hebraism is conduct and obedience" (Arnold, 1993, p. 127). Arnold contends that poetry must replace the outworn mode of prior religious thought. Arnold reverently quotes Goethe who conceived of freedom as the ability to operate within a divinely appointed social order. Yet for himself Arnold insists upon freedom as being a value centered in a community which strives to attain democratic social progress.
