Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber (1998) commented on misconceptions and controversies that are associated with the development of aggression and violence. Previous studies have provided a correlation between early and later aggression of .63 average and they have found that severe emotional temper tantrums are stable over time. Correlations between early and later antisocial behavior are as high as .92 for boys' antisocial behavior between Grades four and six, and six and eight. Early aggression has been found to predict later violence to include fighting by age 18, partner assault, and conviction by age 32 for violent offenses. Thus it appears that aggression is stable over time. However these correlations are poor indicators of stability and change since they fail to present the degree of stability and change or the prevalence, frequency, or seriousness that may change over time.
