Given the uncertainties of the contemporary global political environment, an hypothesis is offered as an explanation of how the termination of the "Cold War" will affect relations between the great powers during the last-half of the decade of the 1990s. This hypothesis is as follows: "The political and economic objectives of the United States largely will determine the character of relations between the great power nations from 1996 through 2000."
