ce are negative. Specifically, divorced women tend to have considerably less yearly income than they did when they were married, and this is especially true for families with children. This point has been made by Page and Stevens (2003) who reported that:

...family structure has a significant impact on the economic status of families with children. In the long run, family income of children who parents divorce and remain divorced for at least 6 years falls by 45 percent, and food consumption is reduced by 16 percent.... but those whose parents marry and remain married for at least 6 years experience income gains of around 70 percent. (p.3).

Indications are that for minority women with children, this loss of income may be even worse. In this regard, Americans for Divorce Reform (2005) reports that for black women, a divorce causes income to fall during the first two years by about 53 percent on average whereas for white women this fall is only about 30 percent on average.
