The influence of the media, combined with the world of fashion design has consecutively and subtly redefined the appropriate weight and size appearance of the 'successful' or 'perfect' woman. For instance, it is a fact that in 1950 the average measurements of mannequins resembled closely real women. The average hip measurement of a woman was approximately 34" and the average hip measurement of a mannequin was 34". Just a mere 40 years later the average female hip measurement had risen slightly to 37" while the average hip measurement of a mannequin shrunk to 31" รป an equivalent difference of 6". If mannequins built today were actual human women, their theoretical body-fat percentages indicate they would have since ceased menstruation.
