Other statistics concur with this problem. "Southern Nevada draws 90 percent of its water from the Colorado River, which scientists believe has hit its weakest flow level in 500 to 1,000 years" (Berns 1.B).
However, another writer makes the point that it is not the casinos that are the worst water-use offenders: "In factà.local hotels account for 7 percent of the area's total useàThe biggest problem in the Valley is personal lawns" (Smith 4). In other words, the tremendous growth in population, not the building of new and larger hotel-casinos seems to be at the heart of the problem.
