Kant held that human beings and the institutions they create are not passive pawns of natural forces. Human beings and their institutions are able to regulate behavior in accordance with a moral law. Solomon and Higgins (1996) state that Kant is convinced that because human beings all possess the same faculty of reason, they will all reach the same conclusions regarding morality. In general, reason tells us that it is important to resist inclination when one cannot endorse the same type of behavior on the part of others in similar circumstances. Morality requires respect for the rationality of others, their essential humanity, and their dignity.
