There are at least two different kinds of domestic violence group. One focuses on serving the victims of domestic violence, while the other works with offenders, or perpetrators of domestic violence. These are very different types of groups, with varied goals and methods.
In this section, the focus is on domestic violence groups for victims. Although there are a few offenders who voluntarily present for treatment, this is very rare. Most individuals voluntarily joining groups to deal with domestic violence issues are women.
Women often reach these groups through specialized community agencies set up to deal with domestic violence and sexual assault. These agencies may operate shelters for women leaving abusive relationships, or offer safe homes for women to stay in temporarily. Almost all of them have some provision for domestic violence groups for battered women, whether still in the abusive relationship or breaking free from it (Roberts, 1996).
