Wellbutrin is used for the treatment of major depression characterized by a prominent and relatively persistent depressed or dysphoric mood which interferes with normal daily functioning almost every day for a period of at least two weeks duration. Symptoms requiring Wellbutrin should include at least four of the following: changes in appetite; changes in sleep patterns; psychomotor agitation or retardation; loss of interest in usual activities or loss of sexual drive; increased fatigue; slowed thinking or impaired concentration; increased feelings of guilt and unworthiness; and suicidal ideation or attempts.

The precise mode of action of Wellbutrin is unknown, but it does not inhibit monoamine oxidase. It is a weaker blocker of serotonin uptake and norepinephrine than tricyclic antidepressants, and inhibits the reuptake of dopamine to some extent.
