Racial Differences in Incidence of Diabetes

nsulin profiles in children, independent of body composition and social class background. Ninety-five African American and white children, average age 10 years, were studied by looking at their macronutrient and food group intakes. The risk for cardiovascular disease and Type II diabetes were assessed based on total cholesterol and triacylglycerol, insulin sensitivity, and acute insulin response.

African American children were found to have lower triacylglycerol and insulin sensitivity, and a higher acute insulin response than white children. African American children had a higher intake of fruits and vegetables, and a lower intake of dairy than white children. Carbohydrate and food intake were positively associated with insulin sensitivity, and vegetable intake was negatively associated with the acute insulin response.
