Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Three highly divisive forces at play globally in the first decade of the twenty-first century are nationalism, ethnicity, and religion. Problems associated with these forces are exacerbated where religion, ethnicity, and nationalism interact. The longer such problems simmer, the more intractable they appear to become (Kurth, 2001). One such case involves the decades-long dispute between the Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East, where the Israelis and the Palestinians have been attempting to coexist (at times with more success than at other times) on the same land for centuries (Binder, 1999).

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been the focus of intensive negotiations for more than three decades. The objectives of all of the negotiations have been to find a solution acceptable to both the Israelis and the Palestinians. In spite of many promising efforts, such a solution has thus far eluded all of the negotiators (Gazit & Abington, 2001).

The Palestinian Intifada began about four years ago, when the current Israeli Prime Minister (then simply a minister in the Israeli government of the day) purposefully committed an act in Jerusalem that was designed to gain the support of conservative Israelis, and which was just as certain to draw the ire of Palestinians. Mr. Sharon was successful on both counts, and over the past two years, successive and seemingly unending actions and counter actions by both Israelis and Palestinians cause the conflict to be in one of it

were collected through the application of keyword research on the English language CNN Web site and the Arabic language Al-Jazeera Web site. Applying the approach described above, 200 news stories were identified. Of these 200 news stories, 80 were presented on CNN and 120 were presented in Al-Jazeera. Resource limitations associated with time and money led to a decision to analyze a sample of the population of news stories. A cluster sampling approach was applied, in which an equal number of news stories was selected from the CNN Web site and the Al-Jazeera Web site. Random procedures were applied to select 50 news stories from each Web site providing a total sample of 100 news presentations that met the criteria for including in the data base for investigation. The analytical approach borrows heavily from Entman (1991), Garrison (1999), and Wolfsfeld (1997). CNN.com is among the world's leaders in online news and information delivery. The Web site is staffed 24 hours, seven days a week by media professionals at CNN's world headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, by CNN bureaus worldwide, and by a global team of almost 4,000 news professionals. The Web site maintains searchable archives of news features and background infor
