LANGUAGE DELAYED LEARNING DISABLITY

LANGUAGE DELAYED LEARNING DISABLITY

Language disorder includes impairment in comprehension or use of spoken, written, or other symbol systems, involving the language form (phonology, morphology, syntax), language content (semantics), or language function in communication (pragmatics). Delayed language refers to the timing of language acquisition and late onset of development. Receptive language disabilities refer to impairment in following directions, appearing inattentive. Expressive language disabilities refer to those unable or reluctant to participate in activities requiring language use (Ch. 1, pp. 8-9). Speech and language delays are distinguished (Kids Health for Parents [KHFP], 2000).

Communication is delayed when a child is behind peers in the acquisition of speech or language skills. The child may or may not have more receptive than expressive language skills. Language disorder refers to impaired ability to understand or use words verbally or non-verbally. Characteristics include improper use of words and meanings, reduced vocabulary, inappropriate grammatical patterns, and inability to express ideas or follow instructions (NICHCY, 2000).

Language delays are characterized by the following: a 2- to 3-year-old only being able to imitate speech or actions and unable to produce words or phrases; a child doing only particular things, repeatedly; an inability to use oral language to communicate other than immediate needs; and inability to follow simple directions (KHFP, 2000).

It has been estimated that in 1997-1998, over one million students enrolled in public schools' special education programs were categorized with speech or language impairment. It is also estimated that one out of every 10 people in the United States, suffers from a communication disorder (NICHCY, 2000).
