LANGUAGE DELAYED LEARNING DISABLITY Language disorder includes impairment in comprehension or use of spoken, written, or other symbol systems, involving the language form (phonology, morphology, syntax), language content (semantics), or language function in communication (pragmatics). Delayed language refers to the timing of language acquisition and late onset of development. Receptive language disabilities refer to impairment in following directions, appearing inattentive. Expressive language disabilities refer to those unable or reluctant to participate in activities requiring language use (Ch. 1, pp. 8-9). Speech and language delays are distinguished (Kids Health for Parents [KHFP], 2000). Communication is delayed when a child is behind peers in the acquisition of speech or language skills. The child may or may not have more receptive than expressive language skills. Language disorder refers to impaired ability to understand or use words verbally or non-verbally. Characteristics include improper use of words and meanings, reduced vocabulary, inappropriate grammatical patterns, and inability to express ideas or follow instructions (NICHCY, 2000).
