Orem's Model of Nursing

al requisites are common to everyone, such as food, water, elimination, promotion of human functioning; developmental requisites are those associated with conditions that promote known developmental processes throughout the life cycle; health deviation requisites relate to defects and deviations from normal structure and integrity that impair an individual's ability to perform self-care. There are six self-care requisites common to everyone:

1) the maintenance of a sufficient intake of air, water and food

2) the provision of care associated with elimination processes and excrements

3) the maintenance of a balance between activity and rest

4) the maintenance of balance between solitude and social interaction

5) the prevention of hazards to human life, human functioning, and human well-being

6) the promotion of human functioning and development within social groups in accordance with human potential, known human limitations, and the human desire to be normal. Normalcy is defined as that which is essentially human and that which is in accordance with the genetic and constitutional characteristics and talents of individuals (Taylor, 191-192).

Developmental self-care requisites and universal self-care requisites were separated in Orem's later work, promoting processes for life and maturation and preventing conditions deleterious to maturation, or those that mitigate those effects.

These self-care requisites exist for people who are ill or injured and have pathological conditions or disorders, defects and disabilities and are undergoing medical diagnosis and treatment (Taylor, 192). Diseases and disabilities affect overall human functioning as well as the specific parts involved in the disease/injury process.
