With such a wide range of professions open to women now, nursing is not an attractive profession. A study by the American Nurses Association in 2001 found that 55 percent of 7,300 nurses surveyed would not recommend the profession to others (Yin, 2002). The mean age of nurses in 2001, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics was 45; the percentage of RNs under 35 dropped to 24 percent; and the percentage of young nurses under 25 was down to three percent.
