NURSING RESEARCH PROJECT

asic characteristics of qualitative research, the author notes that qualitative studies usually gather data using unstructured or semi-structured research instruments and that findings are more in-depth due to the nature of open-ended questions. Further, Anselem-Strauss points out that qualitative findings are far more focused on the details of behavior, attitudes, and motivations of sample subjects than is found in quantitative studies. The sample sizes tend to be smaller than quantitative studies and are often not representative of the population. In addition, qualitative studies are often not replicable, and the analysis of findings typically is often more subjective.

It can be noted here that reliance on open-ended questions in favor of more standardized and structured instruments was a major element of the Mogotlane et. al (2004) study of what led to mortality and morbidity in traditional circumcised Xhosa males living in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The Mogotlane study also utilized data collected from focus groups of those who went through and those who were still in the initiative process. These focus groups were small and not necessarily representative of the entire population of those undergoing traditional circumcision in the specified geographic area. Also, the study was a very in-depth exploratory process, not only because it collected focus group data but also because it supplemented these data with additional information collected from hospital records and informants such as hospital physicians and those who knew the initiates. Thus, in all these ways, the Mogotlane et al (2004) study satisfied the basic characteristics of qualitative research specified by Anselm-Strauss' (1998).

Regarding the Anselem-Strauss' specification that characteristically qualitative research was inte
