Non-Government Organizations

s. Affiliation with the DPI not only means that NGOs help spread the UN's mission and objectives through their organization, but puts NGOs in a position to help shape the very mission and goals of various UN programs ("NGO Forum," 2000).

In order to be associated with the DPI, an NGO must support and respect the charter of the UN, and be recognized on either a national or international basis. The NGO must be non-profit and tax-exempt under the laws of its home nation, and have resources sufficient to assist in the dissemination of information on behalf of the UN. In order to show that the NGO is a viable entity, it must demonstrate sustained operations for at least three years as well as demonstrate the ability to continue to sustain operations. Prior to formal association with the DPI, the NGO must have shown that it is able to support and collaborate with other UN information sources. An annual report and copies of by-laws are also required for association with the DPI ("Association Between," 2002).
