maintain and support everything from a farm of servers to thousands of handheld devices. They need reusable code and automated development tools to create rich, customizable services without sacrificing manageability and security. And they need to bring it all together, across multiple business systems, inside and outside the company (Ballmer 2000 Online).

From a development point of view, Ballmer's acknowledgement of "reusable code and automated development" was intriguing since both the Navigator and Explorer fall seriously short in that department. If ever there was a need for reusable code, it is in answer to the frequent demands from management to provide "cascade" style sheets.

These sheets require basic coding and definition of property values that must be compatible for the pages to register in the same way whether the end user is browsing on Netscape or Microsoft.

Netscape Navigator 6 (released in April) and the new Microsoft 5.5 released several weeks ago were compared. A simple property font code will be used to show the differences that still exist. The task in front of us is to make a text instruction appear in italics.

Netscape provides italic support for this set of supported values:

| serif | sans-serif | monospace | cursive | fantasy>.

Explorer, on the other hand, only supports this set of values.

Likewise, in Explorer, the use of font names with whitespace is unsupported for inline styles. For example, the command : gives an error message. When the developer clicks on the Help signal, the explanation reads: "When using font names with whitespace, the property definition must be terminated with a semi-colon (;) in order for Internet Explorer to parse subsequent styles reliably."
