History of Netscape

This is an excerpt from the paper...

When a start-up company bursts on the market and distributes more than 38 million units of its product, increases its workforce tenfold in two years, and builds a revenue stream of more than $300 million, the investment community, not to mention the competition, takes notice. This research examines Netscape's short history, its financial performance, the competition that the company faces, and the prospects of Netscape as a career choice.

Netscape Communications (NSCP) develops software that enables information exchange and commerce over the Internet (the global computer network) and intranets (enterprise-specific computer networks). Netscape products allow individuals and corporations to conduct secure financial transactions across the Internet, including buying and selling, which makes its products attractive to the business community at large. In addition, the Netscape Navigator is used to interact with the World Wide Web (Web) to create, manipulate and retrieve documents that contain formatted text, audio/video clips and graphic images.

Yet despite its strong growth, Netscape is still among the smallest of the competitors in this market: analysts put Microsoft's 1996 revenues at more than $8.6 billion; Computer Associates and Oracle both are estimated to have 1996 revenues in excess of $4 billion. However, Netscape is expected to outperform Broderbund, a company which has been around longer than Netscape, but which is estimated to have 1996 revenues of only $190 million. Strengths One of Netscape's primary strengths may well come from the fact that its most serious competitor, Microsoft, is both respected and feared in the market. Large institutions, which are the market that both Netscape and Microsoft are pursuing with their server products, are wary of "single sourcing" any part of their operations, including computer software. Having more than one viable competitor providing similar products puts pressure on all competitors in the market, and for this reason, there are numerous large companies in the market for this type of software which are considering using Netscape products over Microsoft products in part because Netscape Communications is not Microsoft, Inc.
