Entry into this market is difficult with many barriers; Netscape's own success and ability to overcome these barriers is, in part, responsible for the difficulty that new competitors now have. When Netscape entered this market in the mid-1990s, the Internet was just beginning to experience the exponential growth that has characterized over the past several years. As a result, there were few companies manufacturing products similar to what Netscape introduced, particularly in the navigator market.
