The issue becomes even more transparent when one examines sociological and political science journals. For example, Angela Aujla (41), writing in Canadian Woman Studies, described at some length the difficulties encountered by second generation South Asian Canadian women in the context of a dominant culture "which categorizes them as visible minorities, ethnics, immigrants, and foreigners -- categories considered incommensurable with being a 'real' Canadian, despite the promises of multiculturalism." Without in any sense denigrating the lived experiences of South Asian Canadian women as a collection of ethnic minorities in a predominantly Caucasian country, the fact of the matter is that Canada has created many policy structures that actively embrace multiculturalism which, in the Canadian context, "is a government-sanctioned system essentially for the protection and promotion of the various cultures making up the Canadian mosaic" (Robertson, 99).
